Many Miles
Many Miles, the title track and first song on our EP, represents the beginning of our story. Subtle characteristics (the good and the bad) of a new day are recognized and appreciated. Accepting that this life can be uncertain and unkind. Going after life with no regret. It’s about realizing the world is yours and you can do whatever you want with the right mindset and motivation to pursue. The lyric “Many miles from where I was before’’ relates to the concept of moving forward and recognizing the physical and mental differences of the process.
Nova Scotia Sky
N.S.S is a true poem of appreciation for the beautiful province we live in. The song was written while walking on the boardwalk in the Downtown Dartmouth area. I took my mind out of the young man that grew up here, and tried to see through the eyes of a tourist. Now noticing more of the main landmarks, attractions, and unique ways about the Halifax-Dartmouth area. Upon the initial moment of this approach, I noticed the loud firing of the noon cannon. Even though the sound carries for miles, it isn’t always heard or noticed. This example can be universal for the defining and meaningful parts of the place we live in and how we take them for granted.
Fire
Fire represents a dream state within the EP. It is a very pivotal point and stylistically, it leads the listener to a closer, more personal yet ambient soundscape. This is the point in the story where the man is overcome by a nostalgic feeling of bittersweet affection and longing. Reminded by the familiarity of another’s touch, and the internal landscape within the mind through which he once wandered. We all dream to different extents and have all longed for a moment lost as time moves on.
Say You Love The
Say You Love The is a true expression of anger and insanity. The song relates to the feeling of inadequacy and worthlessness. The expression of the vocals shift between an eerie lonesome tone of voice to screaming as the man in the story battles with creeping sedation and delirium. The setting is captured on a backroad highway in rural Nova Scotia. On a pitch-black night surrounded by quiet wilderness, the individual gambles with life by leaning into his fully manic state.
Breath Away
Breath Away is a recollection of the story lived throughout the record and is the most intimate song given its very natural “in the room” feel. It is closest to the sound that we wanted to achieve with the “live-off-the-floor” approach. Some songs write themselves, and this one truly did. After a single take, we gathered in the control room and listened to something that we had never thought would come out of the four of us. The natural flow of the performance intertwined effortlessly to write a story of its own. Relating to the name Breath Away, it is a final deep exhale after the roller coaster of emotion throughout the project.
New Beginning
The story within Many Miles
A man sets off on a journey to find a new beginning. Longing for the love that was lost, he steps into a new reality to find a life of his own. Pulling away from connection, he finds himself placed into a new state of being: An existence of solitude.
In search of inner peace and a fresh start, the young man begins his trek across the Maritime landscape. A new sensation washes over him as he peers over the Atlantic to the horizon line. His face is met by the “The feeling of the wind and the morning sun”. The subtle characteristics of the new day. With a deep breath in and out, he eases into the acceptance of this uncertain adventure and puts himself in motion towards a new beginning.
To rejuvenate his love for the world, he heads home to spend time with family and friends where he spends countless days and nights regenerating his soul in the place he grew up. This once familiar scenery invokes deep nostalgia and a bittersweet feeling.
On the last night home, he gathers his closest friends and takes them to the beach for a bonfire. One last hurrah before heading onward.
On that perfectly still night, the silence was broken by a crackling fire, the crashing of waves, the excited hollering of conversation, and sweet sounds of a classic song that all would tune in for. For a small instant the man walks from the fire for a moment of reflection. With a warm buzz he looks up into the clear night sky and everything went quiet. The Nova Scotian sky displayed an array of lights that calmed his inner thoughts and feelings of the here and now. With a deep inhale, he took in the fresh aroma of the ocean and let it out with a deep sigh.
He internally reminds himself these moments don’t tend to stay and wishes they would last a while.
As the night comes to an end he finds himself restless with thoughts of the past. Tossing and turning in bed until his brain finally settles. A sudden transition to the dream state opens unconsciously and he finds himself walking down a road that seems somewhat familiar. Everything is faded and though he cannot make out the area or clearly see the objects around him, the feeling inside tells him he's been here before.
A longing for love burns like a fire in his chest as he aimlessly roams into the mystic. A faint melody chimes from a soft voice in the distance and he runs towards it to find the source. Only for it to get further and further away, eventually vanishing. He trips while running and flashes back into reality. The melody still lingering throughout his mind.
Exhausted from restlessness and angered from the feeling of being insufficient he sets off into the night. Delusional haze and vicious thoughts fuse together to push the man into a state of numbness.
Barreling down a one-lane highway in the dead of night, fueled by a forbidden substance,, and guided by a blistering red moon - he finally reaches a new state of carelessness in life. He pulls the throttle fully towards him and closes his eyes trusting the instinct of a higher being. He takes a deep breath in…
